There are pros and cons to Emma Stone's outfit here.

The con, of course, is that it's heinous.

Obviously I wasn't there, but I am pretty sure that Rose Nyland wore this to her wedding rehearsal dinner back in St. Olaf.

However, the pro is that at least this means Emma Stone may grow up into the kind of friend for whom, if she threw a party and invited everyone she knew, she would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say, "Thank you for being a friend." I'm so glad we have that to look forward to now.
By now, everyone's probably heard the news that this weekend, our beloved Bea Arthur -- Lady of the Lanai, Countess of Caftans -- passed away from cancer at age 86, sparking an endless parade of "and then there was NOT Maude" status updates on Facebook.

This is how we felt when we heard the news:

I mean, we LIVE on Golden Girls references. We devour memories of the ensembles from that sparkling age.

Yes, Blanche looks batty. But LOOK AT DOROTHY'S TUXEDO THING. I don't know if it's weirdly reflective crushed velvet, or what, but the light catches it as if it's cow-patterned on the skirt. It's AMAZING. And the scowl! Want to see what our souls look like whenever we see something on a celebrity that looks awful? Behold:
Given the number of times we mention The Golden Girls on this site, it should be no surprise what a sucker-punch to the gut we felt when we heard Estelle Getty -- the mighty Sophia Petrillo -- died today. It feels like only two weeks ago that we watched her in Mannequin, telling James Spader that she supported Andrew McCarthy so much, she didn't care if he "put a rubber glove on his head and [ran] naked around the store screaming, 'Hi! I'm a squid!'" ... Oh, wait. That WAS two weeks ago. And it was good.

In the Defamer entry on her sad passing, a commenter posted a link to this video, and we felt its brilliance easily deserved its own page. So get out your giant tri-focals, your wicker purses, and your orthopedic moccasins, and eat a slice of cheesecake in honor of the woman who brought us this.

Picture it: Los Angeles, 2008. Two sad bloggers and their weeping Intern scour Lifetime for reruns, and send good wishes to Estelle's family. Thank you for being a friend.

Rihanna is fascinating to me. Style-wise, she is all over the map -- tight satin, lace bodysuits, short skirts, leather, and more -- and while there's nothing wrong with that, it means that Rihanna is also a bit of a roller-coaster. She's under a huge fashion umbrella-ella-ella, is what I'm saying (because you all know I can't resist the hacky joke when it's there, and even sometimes when it's not).

As proof, check out her array of Grammy outfits. First, the ones I more-or-less liked:

Some of the details on this are nice; others are overly fussy. Mostly, the skirt just makes me wonder if it's a tribute to Sam The Eagle, or perhaps what one would wear if she was the Bride of Grover. Still, on the whole, it works. And she IS young, after all. That's the time to play around with ruffles, both of the fabric AND potato-chip variety.

This one, for me, turned out pretty cute also. The longer I look at it, the more I think the ruffles work -- at first I feared they looked like she poked her arms through two giant Fancy-Dress Scrunchies, but actually they're an interesting way to spice up the classic little black dress. Unfortunately, though, when I factor in the hair, I can't get over thinking she looks like some kind of exotic bird.

But maybe that's just because I had already seen her in this ode to A Creature:
