Fug or Fab: Minnie Driver

So, I guess Minnie Driver is in this new movie, Motherhood, for which I just saw an trailer. It seems to be about a harried and somewhat downtrodden stay-at-home blogger/mom who runs errands in her nightgown and knows a lot of working mothers who are kind of mean to her. It is hard to tell from two and a half minutes, but I suspect this might annoy bloggers, stay-at-home mothers, mothers with jobs outside of the home, and women who are asked to believe that Uma Thurman is anything other than incredibly striking and youthful looking, by which I mean: all of us. But trailers can be misleading: Heather and I have a friend who once announced, based solely on the trailer, that if the Johnny Depp/Penelope Cruz movie Blow didn't sweep the Oscars, he was going to leave town forever. I believe he is in Burbank right now.

I don't think Motherhood is going to sweep anything, and I am equally unsure about this:

SHE looks great -- like, as a person -- and I am easily amused by a saucy print. That being said....

Pretty! I really like that on her...

She looks like really beautiful, age appropriate woman, not some tarted up starlet. Nicely done.

I adore her, what a brilliant smile! But she's wearing grandma's drapery fabric. The cut of the skirt is good, but the neckline and sleeves scream Little Old Lady on the Patio.

I like the dress, loooooove the print, but slightly more done hair, loose chignon, would make it work better.

She does look great, but a wee bit (or even a lot) shorter and perhaps a little more structure? I feel like only the hand on her waist is making it clear that she *has* a waist and that once you get past the pretty, pretty, pretty clutch the dress just become a sack. The whole thing is pretty much a sack, actually, albeit one in an attractive color/pattern. It's like the world's fanciest slanket.

I'm torn on this: She looks great, and I'm quite convinced that of all the bizarre-print, muumuu-like dresses out there, she has the very best one. And yet.

I dig the dress a lot, but I agree that a different hairstyle would look nicer. The loose chignon idea is excellent, and would show off her neckline and shoulders, which are complimented by the cut of the dress.

I think she's one of the few women who could pull this off...and she does. She looks vibrant and I think the dress/print are part of the reason. Her coloring really pops in this.

I disagree that it's totally shapeless. It looks to me like a bias cut gown, and once she took the had off the hip and took a step, you'd see her curves.

She's gorgeous, isn't she? I think I would normally HATE this dress, but she looks so relaxed and pretty *including her hair* that I kind of love it. Also, it's frankly a relief to see a dressed up celebrity looking comfortable instead of worrying about whether they can breathe, whether they're freezing, or whether they're constantly tensed to prevent accidental flashing us all.

You guys, that's hideous. HIDEOUS.

This is nice, but I think it would look better if it were a little shorter and maybe with some kind of belt to show her waist.

Oh she is working it but I think if it was either a demure knee-length with some mildly sassy shoes or if you kept the length but lost some of the volume at the top she would be much better off. But big points for not showing off all the goods in the store and still looking lovely.

I like it! But I would like it better if it were shorter, maybe knee length...

it looks like Mrs. Roper got all gussied up for a movie premiere. All that's missing are some brightly-colored, plastic bead necklaces and some libidinous chatter with her upstairs neighbors: Jack, Janet & Chrissy.

I'd like it so much more if it didn't make her look like the world's most unappetizing carrot.

The combination of the style of the dress and the print is too much. Either make the dress a solid color or choose a different style dress for the print. After that I don't know. I don't hate the print, but I'm unsure how to make it look great on a dress. Maybe it would make a better handbag... or stationary paper.
I love Minnie Driver and miss her in movies.

I totally misread "Motherhood" as "Motherblood," and I was like, "What the hell is Minnie Driver doing in a vampire movie?" But then my brain re-started and here we are.

The top is a little slouchy for me, but at least I can see where her waist is. Somebody above suggested a chignon; I second that.

I like her, so I want to like this. And I do. Sort of.

I like the feathers. You don't see enough feathers on dresses.

BUT...I don't like the shape, the fact it looks an incy, wincy bit cheap (does anyone know how you actually go about spelling wincy? or Incy?), and the feeling that this is more of a day dress.

Seriously, as a day dress, with some cute sandals and some aviators, I think I'd really like it.

And I can't escape the feeling that she can look better than this. She has a banging body, and if that dress ended at about her knees and her hair was in a chignon (I always think the whole point of an off-the-shoulder dress is to profile the shoulders. And remind me of Cadbury's Flake adverts. Mmmmmmm.) I'd say it was a win.

Also I don't care for the clutch at all, my good sir.

I second this:

This is nice, but I think it would look better if it were a little shorter and maybe with some kind of belt to show her waist.

Except I wouldn't call it nice as it is. Without modifications, I vote fug.

I really like the print, I kinda wish this was a little more refined I guess. Maybe a belt and make it knee length? It looks like it might kind of have a droopy waist type of thing going so get rid of that. And a necklace perhaps?

I cannot imagine walking into a boutique and saying, "At last! The dress/caftan/muumuu I've been looking for all of my life!" But, I'm kind of glad Minnie did, because it looks really good on her - I wouldn't shorten it or anything. I love that her hair is simple and her make-up appropriate and that she's showing a little skin on her clavicles (word of the day, "clavicles" - look it up) and that she resisted the temptation to wear something on her neck. Will she get years of wear out of this (like the lie those damned brides keep telling the bridesmaids about those hideous dresses)? I think...maybe, especially when she becomes my Aunt Esther and has the girls around for some canasta, daiquiris and gossip about Mort, the hot widower who owns the local dry cleaner.

Like other commenters, I think it would look better if it was shorter (knee length) and was a little bit more fitted. A wide belt, with a shorter, slimmer bottom half would work with those same sleeves. As it is, it's just too much fabric/volume.

I do like the Mrs. Roper reference though.

I think it would be way better if it had a v-neck -- or maybe were a wrap dress? Who's with me?

Who knew she was in Bea Arthur's will?

I guess I was channeling Flory, because when I saw the dress all I could think is that it's a bit too "Blanche Devereux serves manhattans on the lanai" for my taste.

The colours are great on her and I like the neckline but the sleeves and the skirt are weird. I think if we could see her feet it would help, but I still don't think it would seem "red carpet appropriate"

I wouldn't wear this but I think it looks great on her.

It just isn't working for me... She looks lovely, but it seems a bit too... I don't know.. too... "I'll just throw on this silky bathrobe and go out."

Shape of the dress is great but I'm not so sure about the print. On the other hand, it definitely needs some kind of print or bright colour to look good, so...

Oh well, at least the lady inside the dress looks gorgeous!

where are her hips?

I do appreciate that it is subtley sexy on her, it fits her really well and shows off a slim waist. I also appreciate that she is wearing something attractive but clearly for a more mature woman, though I'd argue she is on the younger spectrum of women who should wear that dress, it is good on her but would be perfection on Signourney Weaver or Joan Allen

Yeahandalso,

or Wrinklerella.

On it's own, I am meh on the dress. But she is kind of rocking it, no?

I love the open neck and the whole spike silhouette. She looks great. It's a muumuu that works!

Just a little too long. Shorten it up and I love the look.

Forget Minnie Driver. I want Cindy Crawford's shoes in the post above. As in WANT THEM.

Minnie looks lovely. Hair, make-up, all good. The dress, however, I would shorten and change the print. I also like a saucy print, but not this one. And the length of the dress here is for someone much older than Minnie. Shorten it to knee-length, and we're getting somewhere.

Also, that movie sounds AWFUL.

I am too busy being offended by the synopsis of that Motherhood movie to notice the odd feather dress.

I am really sick of the super-short dress trend, but I think this needs an infusion of some of that. As it is, despite how great SHE looks, the overall look is like that of a decorative drape with a scarily-lifelike pretty lady's head on top that you put over the brooms to disguise them in the corner.

The more I look at it the more I like it, which I think means I really like the print. I definitely agree with those who says that it's a day dress, though, like for a fall day party. I also wouldn't mind seeing it shorter. Regardless, she is gorgeous.

at first i was shocked by the print, in its tackyness. but the cut of the dress is very nice, i do think it suits her and also the bit of colour sprucing it up isn't bad either.
i do think i should go with my first insinct on the print though, could be better. could needs to be injected into this, with a less jarring print.

I adore Minnie Driver, so I can't possibly be objective about this, but.........it's not her best look.

I appreciate the modesty, age appropriateness, etc., but I think she could have done better.

First of all, darlings, your page formatting is broken!

Now: the print is just artfully outrageous enough to work, but something has got to give to get it out of the caftan territory. I'm going with "get rid of those droopy sleeves" myself, but a belt or closer tailoring through the torso are a could work, as well.

Um, NO. I just don't get caftans. They aren't flattering, on ANYONE! The print is gorgeous, but a shorter length and less billowy sleeves and a more styled 'do would knock this one out of the park. JUST SAY NO TO CAFTANS!

The somber hot-amethyst clutch is doing this no favors--something black with a dash of funkfeather would give this look more conviction. The print tickles me.

Let's try this pattern only a little smaller... on a cool blousy tank that is tucked into a shot-ish black pencil skirt with a cool bright colored (I'm thinking hot pink) cropped leather jacket and some black leather booties and we're in a whole new kind of business here.

You guys, this is horrible! It's like something from Kath and Kim, seriously. Yes, there's a fit, but it's still a horribly loud print and Minnie deserves better!

I first saw photos of this at a British newspaper site and expected to find it here as the subject of debate.

I admit I can think of no other woman who could wear this and make it work. Still I have to say Minnie Driver makes it work for her overtime. On her it is jaunty fun and chic while she overall looks wonderfully beautiful in it. A winner & Totally Fab!

I actually love this. I think the cut of it is classy and the pattern is cute, and she totally rocks it. My only concern is whether or not "playful matron" is where she was going with this.

Cut the length to a mini and add a belt. Done.

Other than that I actually quite like it.

hmmm is the "Well" meant to be said ala Samantha Stevens in Bewitched? because thats how it sounded in my head... and I couldn't agree more.

Its like Minnie's saucy witch cousin showed up instead... only she didn't have anything to wear so borrowed one of the many fabulous MuuMuus from Endora.

Or am I alone in seeing that?

I think she looks pretty. She's pulling it off.
That purse is hideous though.

I love the print, but the dress needs to be shorter - maybe a flowy bit above the knee or just below. The straight hemline is too boring. As is, it just looks too old for her.

Before I saw this: If you told me that I would like a caftan with feather print, I would call you crazy, but I actually really love this on her! Go figure!

Two words and a contraction:

Good N' Plenty

She absolutely looks great-she's Minnie-freaking-Driver. Her outfit, on the other hand, is horrifying. In addition to aging her roughly 20 years (I say roughly because I have a specific number in mind that this ages her to, but I don't know how old she actually is and am MUCH too lazy to look it up), the way it narrows at the ankles makes her look like a lollipop: teeny tiny stick on the bottom, big and round on top. And while the top of a lollipop is certainly the most delicious portion of the thing (so the metaphor holds up nicely!), I feel it is a shape we don't really want to emulate, yes?

I think her face is fresh and pleasant looking, she did a good job matching the accessories to the dress and she played it smart by not wearing a necklace or a crazy hairstyle with such a busy print. As for the print, I think I kind of love it. It's bright and interesting, However, it's the FIT of the dress that makes me sad. If it had a waist and maybe showed some leg (perhaps knee-length?) I think it would add the touch of sexy fabulousness that is missing from this outfit.

She looks tapered. If it were shorter, then we could be working with something good, but at this length she just looks like the world's most unappealing ice cream cone.

Should be shorter - just above the knee, methinks. The clutch should be closer to the peachy color than the fuchsia, it doesn't look right in that color. I'm not a fan of the pattern, but I think it looks really good on her (I'd look like a beached couch from grandma's winter place in Boynton Beach though).

Dresses that eat feet and invite tripping! I cannot condone this!

Shorten it up, and it's cute.

I'd allow it if it was party-dress length and she had a cute belt over it. She's so adorable that I'm willing to forgive the print.

This is shocking. SHOCKING.

And momsy and another-era hostessy and I am afraid she is going to offer me a canapé that overthinks the gherkin.

Her face looks nice.

i LOVE this dress. i'm just not sure she's got a big enough pair to pull it off. own it!
