So, singer Monica, of "The Boy Is Mine" fame, is apparently making a comeback. I just read that she has a new album, and a reality show on BET about said new album, and, ergo, she's making the rounds lately.

As a coat? YES. As a dress...Well, it looks an awful lot like a coat.
Also, while I've got you here, can we just talk about how good the "The Boy is Mine" video was? I totally remember watching this back in the day in my old apartment in Westwood, and all of us were transfixed by one of Brandy's outfits, even at the time. Like...is she just wearing simply the NECK of a turtleneck with her tube top? (We may have also been transfixed by Mekhi Phifer's hotness. I'm just saying.) Seriously, look:

If only I'd had a website then, so that I could have asked the internet that burning turtleneck question in a more timely fashion, and also pointed out to the world how amusing it is that both Brandy's and Monica's groups of girlfriends are clearly SUPER BORED of their friend's endless ranting about how the boy is hers. You know as soon as Brandy/Monica got up to go to the bathroom or get more wine or check their voicemail, all those girls just rolled their eyes at each other, like, "dude, break up with him already." God. I really loved this video. I appreciate your allowing that brief trip back down Late 90s Lane. And now, to the poll:

Sorry Jess - you are overthinking this one. She looks great. End of story.
And "The Boy is Mine" was totally one of my favourite videos from back in the day when I watched videos. Which I never seem to do anymore, largely because I think most videos these days are unwatchable. Which means I am old.
The coat (we're saying it's a coat, because no-one could think that's okay as a dress) is adorable. Her hair on the other hand looks like the love child of a mullet and a beehive. FAIL!
God, Mekhi Phifer WAS so hot. Sigh. I think I had a photo of him taped up inside my locker.
Oh, Fug Girls, we at Auto Tunes love you so--especially for entries like this! Please be our new best friends.

Thanks for the trip back to my high school days..loved that song. Also Mekhi is yummy here and on ER. RIP ER!!!
She is working the coat/dress but the hair has got to go. Be bold like Tyra and wear the long luscious weave!
As a dress, this is just plain silly. As a coat it's too soldiery for my liking, and the belt divides it sort of chunkily. I am a fan of the boots, however.
Actually, my trip is down Late 80's Ave. Am I the only one getting "Rhythm Nation" flashbacks? Maybe it's just the homegrown Minny love for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Or maybe after all these years in the cold up here my music faculties may have been frozen in 1989.
People of the world today
Are we looking for a better way of life (or coat-dress hybrid)?
Sing! We are a part of a Rhythm Nation!
This was never my type of music, and I actually found the song annoying.
But this is about her outfit. I think it works. I am not thrilled with the idea of wearing a coat as a dress, but she is wearing it well. The bright accents to her make up really liven the whole thing up as well.
Love the dash of green on the eyes!
dress = coat, but if you look closely, you'd notice she's wearing a turtleneck under said jacket, which leads me to believe she's wearing a turtleneck/tube top combo underneath.
this video kills me. what kind of cool apartment building has all the rooms connected to their neighbors???
What kind of dude dates girls who live next door to each other? Oh, Mekhi. Hot, but dumb.
LOVE the boots. Confused by the hair.
I think it might actually be a coat - it looks like there may be turtleneck poking out the top of the neck of that (totally awesome and bad ass) coat. If indeed that is a turtleneck, perhaps there is a matching tube top underneath as well. Way to bring the 90s comeback to full circle Monica!
Also, I love the whole look - it's edgy and has the artistic license that us regular folks couldn't pull off while trying to be taken seriously in normal people world.
Oh I didn't see that Jackie had already commented on the tube top/turtleneck combo. Looks like we have similar thought processes! :)
Actually, I think the coatdress looks like she's headed to a steampunk convention. In other words, AWESOME. And probably a lot more fun than whatever event she was actually at.
You know, I've had about enough of this. I get frustrated by the impracticality of these wardrobe decisions. I'm sweating before I leave the house when I'm wearing long sleeves, much less in such a get up; isn't she steaming herself like a frankfurter in there? It can't be comfortable. That's all I can think of, like a grandma.
I said, "GOOD DAY, coat-dress-leggings-boots-roasting-machine!"
Brandy is too gorgeous for words. I could care less about Monica's dress/coat. That is all.
Ok, Brandy wearing only the neck of the turtleneck had me cracking up for a good 5 minutes. And it makes me wonder why this isn't a part of my permanent memory from the video.
Oh, I know why. Mekhi Phifer.
Also: I'd totally rock Monica's coat-as-dress as an actual coat.
No to the belt. Yes to everything else, especially the boots.
Everyone in this video is hot but,the song is bad and the video is AWFUL! apartment-go-rounds were played out in the 80s. yeck. Apollonia wore the last cool military dress.
Well, every day I seem to get slapped in the face with the "Gawd I AM getting old" fish. I have never seen this video before today although I know "of" Brandy and have never laid eyes on Mekhi Phifer before today.
JEEEBUUUS! What a beautiful man.
I'm once, twice, three times a dirty old lady!
BTW the outfit (is it a droat or a cress?) confuses me and I can't understand why a beautiful young woman hides herself behind such heavy makeup when she doesn't need it.
Are we sure she's not just still wearing her coat?
I agree with Jackie on the apartment it's ridiculous and that video is SUCH a classic to me! I also loved when they performed it live.
That said, I'm just pretending it's a coat and moving on
I remember thinking that I really wanted Monica's white jammies when this video first came out... now I watch it again and I STILL want the jammies. But, don't worry Brandy, you did have better hair.
Wow.
Is it November, 1969 yet?
Really: forty years ago, that coat dress, 3-4 inches shorter, navy blue, and unbelted, was *the* look in my high school, although the tights would, for the most fashion points, be silver metallic or weird lustrous nude, with strappy, square-toed, block-heel platform shoes in walnut brown. It was what people whose mothers took them to Seattle to shop at Nordie's were wearing.
Sorry, overcome with nostalgia, can't think of anything to say about Monica except that the belt looks like something which would be used in power-tool packaging- needs to be narrower, or suede, or just less plastic looking.
(aren't 'all glad I showed you what old really means?)
i don't understand, is she trying to come back as ... rihanna?? because i don't think that's working on her. at all.
but please, bring back mekhi phifer. he's delicious.

I think you may just not see videos anymore because all muchmusic or mtv shows these days are crappy reality shows lol
also monica looks cute...but i hate that belt
She looks amazing. I don't want to think too much about the coat/dress debate because it might lead me to the conclusion that she is wearing a black turtleneck catsuit underneath. Perhaps even crushed velvet. That is so totally 90's that I can't even deal. Perhaps it even has a fun geometric cutout on the front, a la Kathy Dennis in the "Touch Me" video. Let's just be happy with what we have and admire that gorgeous eye makeup.
It's definitely a coat. The belt needs to be lower on her waist but otherwise it's great.
Now I'm missing ER. Mekhi Phifer is all kinds of hot.

I think she looks great. I see nothing wrong with this. Mainly because a.) her entire body is covered and that is rare and commendable b.) Though she is wearing a coat and a belt she still has curves and looks fairly sophisticated c.) If I wore this coat with this belt??? WWI Doughboy meets Pillsbury dough boy. I'm jealous that she can pull this off.
The Boy is Mine is a great karaoke song! I have no problems with the hair. I think it is cute and fun. For those of you needing a Mekhi Phifer fix, you can catch him playing an FBI agent on Tim Roth's show, Lie to me.
The belt needs a buckle, or not to be made out of pleather, or something, especially if she is off to a Steampunk convention. And, thank-you for the eye candy, so restful after such a stressful day.
No no no no no. It's of "Just One of Them Days" and "The First Night" fame! Monica sang the soundtrack to my high school years.
God, Mekhi Pfeiffer. . . . divine.
Does anyone remember the hotness of the guy in the the 'I wanna be down' video? My 12 year old self was so in love with that boy!
Oh yeah, the ensemble: It's a coat, not a dress. But I don't HATE it, in fact I think it is a fairly sophisticated look.
TUNE!!!!!!!!! me and my sister used to do little performances of this without a clue what it meant... happy days... oh, and why are we ignoring that hot guy seems to be wearing a satin brown shirt!!!
And what was the problem again...? Oh yes, the belt and probably her hair, too. Coat is fabulous and boots are sooooo sexy.
That 90's one-hit-wonder, however, was totally fug!! I didn't like that then and I definitely don't like that now.
I'm with Katie, it's SO Rythm Nation! Which can only be a good thing. Except the hair, the hair is bad.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTSSSS!!!!! yeayy!
Sing it with me now..."She is a part of the rhythm nation!"
Did anyone else think for a moment that she had a porkpie style hat one when first glancing at this picture?
What was that other sappy video Brandy did right around the same time where she went to her ex boyfriends house and put on his suit and rolled around in it?
I miss ER too!
I think you're missing the entirely fug point here. Dress or Coat? Who cares? I want to know what happened to her luscious hair and what's with that eye makeup?
Those boots could be awesome, but I can't see them!!
I love the coat...perfect outfit for a winter day. Not so sure about the hair do tho.
By the way Fug Girls...you are so our favourite companions on boring days at work. We love you at Link (Australia). Love the funny and witty comments. Love the made up dialogues between celebs.... specially those for JLo..... sooooo hilarious!!!
It was a black tie event, therefore it was absolutely FUG.
I thought as a coat, it looks pretty awesome, but I'm really not digging Monica's hair. Her hair was so awesome and eviable when she wore it long and straight (best depicted in the other video that followed closely behind this one... the name escapes me at the moment, but there was this middle scene where it looked like it was shot with a cheap camcorder. Ringing a bell for anyone?).
I am still shocked that Diana Kruger looked like a really silky pillow!
Monica looks pretty good in the coat but it screams "Lonely Peppers Heart Club Band", to me.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane... Though it kind of makes me feel old!! Definitely a specially-made-to-match-the-halter thick choker-thing. I think.
Finally I know where I remembered the FBI guy in Lie to Me from... Thank you so much :))
