Ugly Fugly and Fug or Fab, America Ferrera

Well. America Ferrera looks fantastic from the neck up.

From the neck down, on the other hand, she looks like sgaeyqi0o8hy6YNHBBBBBBBBZPGIOJI3UUUUUUU 3RUtGXDHHHOoooooooqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq.

Excuse me. I'm so sorry. I just lost consciousness, due to FLAMING FIERY BOREDOM. I mean, sure, this is fine if you're going to court to contest a speeding ticket or to a meeting of your co-op board at which you will be questioned for hours regarding a loud and inappropriate Beer Pong party you may or may not have had, or to sign your will. If you are a twenty-four year old actress, and you are not in Halloween costume as Katie Couric, however, it is unacceptably SNOOZEVILLE. Plus, it is doing her youthful bod no favors.

Later, America changed into this:

Am I still moderately bored? Yes, but I believe this may be a residual boredom from the previous outfit. More like a boredom hangover rather than actual boredom, you know? After all, who loves the Little Black Dress more than I do?  And this is cute one, if you can overlook the conceit that she appears to have been stabbed in the gut and bled beads. Which I think I can, if I try hard enough.

The trouser suit effectively gives her cankles... if that wasn't what she was going for well then something clearly went wrong.

The LBD is cute, even if she is bleeding crystals.

I wish we could see the LBD without the explosion of beads across her stomach... Or maybe the beads in a color other than black?

I don't even think she looks good from the neck up. What is up with that hair? Did she want to try out the super high Bump-It?

Wow. She looks like 30 years older and 25 pounds heavier in the first one. Honey NO.

All I can think when I look at her is "shouldn't you be able to afford something a little more... interesting?" In a word: YAWN.

Oh, America Ferrera... You're so pretty! And young and wonderful and I love you so very, very much! Why not wear something fitted in a nice bright color? Why not flash us a wee bit of cleavage? Why do you want to be 50 years old already?

Cankles are NOT a good look. Those pants are Cankle City. Bad, boring, unflattering choice.

If she were attending some event where she wanted to look smart and classy, say, a "Women in the Arts" luncheon or somesuch, that suit would have been just fine with a pencil skirt instead. Formal capris = NO.

The LBD is okay if not a little boring. Would have been great in a color though.

If she accessorized that first one, she'd be lovely. A scarf, some bling, anything.

The second is oh-la-la! I love it, she looks curvy and feminine and young! Woo!

These are both far too matronly for A.Ferr. Where's the color? Where are the curves?

The first is something I should probably get to meet with clients. And I am, ahem, considerably older than A.Ferr.

I think the problem with the suit is that it's ending in all the wrong places - the jacket should be either shorter or longer, and the trousers should DEFINITELY be longer (though there's something funny about the waistline as well).

Yes, the bump is terrible. The pantsuit is terrible (although I think the angle from which a photo is taken makes a BIG difference). I don't like the dress on her, either. While an LBD isn't automatically too old for a woman this age, this one certainly is.

And no one can pull off what looks like a beaded paintball hit on her tummy.

After seeing some of the clown suits they put her in on her show, I say let her wear something that doesn't cause seizures and/or migraines. Yes, she's young, but everyone needs to have a chill day once in a while.

She has simply GOT to do something else with her lovely, untended locks. I read that the LBD has Swarovski crystals attached with safety pins- how fun!

Whoa, I can't be bored with the first one when it gives her that awful crotch pouch you get with ill-fitting pants. I WISH I was bored. The LBD isn't awful, although my first thought was that she looks strangely dumpy in it. Maybe if it was a LanyothercolourD. Then again, the beads are hyponotizing.

I wish we could check a box that said, "I don't care what she wears, I just love America Ferrera."

And I wish we could check a box that said, "I don't care what she wears, because America Ferrera was such a b* to me once that I can never like her despite wanting to love her curves."

I'm with Victoria and Sara. She's adorable, and she's not dressed to offend.

She looks great. Period.

If you look at the LBD in zoom cam, yes, you can see that the crystals, beads, whatever, are fastened with a punkish assortment of safety pins, which is kinda interesting. Plus, it fits and flatters really well. I think she is lovely, and, while it's a more mature look than most of the girls her age are wearing, let's not object to someone dressing modestly, which is is not the usual complaint around here, if you get my drift.

The hair, I don't know what's going on. Not the best look. I'm sure she can do better.

The horrid pantsuit - has already been dealt with adequately above. Thank you. Burn, please.

I don't like the pants and I don't like her hair. She's such a beautiful woman, she can do a lot better than this.

I even think the hair is a bit much. Both looks make her look like she's participating in the interview rounds of the Miss America pageant.

I think this LBD is AOK. The shape is great for her curves and the sequin is just enough pizazz without being overkill.
Speaking of overkill, she may want to hold back on the teasing of the hair. I don't think Elaine Benes is the person she intended to personify with this styling.

"And I wish we could check a box that said, "I don't care what she wears, because America Ferrera was such a b* to me once that I can never like her despite wanting to love her curves.""

ME TOO. I hate the first one. The LBD is totally cute.

I like her in the second one, the first one is boring but not fug... I think in her size and with the way styling goes her options must be a bit limited and usually stuff geared towards older women... not as many choices as someone that fits into everything (I'm sure most every lady has experienced this).

Color, America! Color is your friend.
Also, I'd add: She looks fabulous from the neck up, and the hairline down. What's with the huge hair bump?

Is it my computer screen, or is the only thing wrong with the LBD the fact that she appears to actually have BROWN shoes on with a LBD?????

Is it wrong that I really love the suit? Do I wish she had belted it with a pop of color or done the peep-toe in a neon or jewel tone? Sure. But as a 23 year old that favors the sort of classic silhouettes that America tends to wear, I'm really digging this look.

Didn't we just have this discussion?? brown shoes, Brown Shoes, BROWN SHOES

Why is she trying to look so frumpy? Let's try something young and stylish, with a little color, cute shoes and different hair. One can be modest and leave gramma's dresses in the closet at the same time. Youth is fleeting, America, maturity will come soo enough.

Just because her suit isn't thrilling doesn't mean it's bad. The pants need to be maybe two inches longer, but besides that, I like it even though it doesn't stand out. It flatters her figure and brings the attention to her face, which, as you said, looks great.

Her great figure keeps the LBD from being matronly.

I would fall for the dress, too, America! I'm a magpie. I love shiny things. It makes me think of a design by Trina Turk, who I love. I would so rock it, and keep touching the crystals, and they would fall off by the end of the night, and I would ruin it the first time I wore it. The End, by booge

I too love her curves and wish she showed them off a la Salma Hayek. Maybe that suit would have worked with a low cut, colorful top? And the dress needs to be shorter by two inches at least before I will even consider it.

BROWN SHOES WITH THE LBD?!?!

What do you mean she looks good from the neck up? Her makeup is nice (still boring, but not unflattering), but her hair looks STUPID. I have yet to see anyone do the Bumpits hair (with or without actual padding) and NOT look like an idiot.

I think the first one was the outfit she wore to get her hair and make-up done and then she changed into the cute dress at the event. In which case, I don't have a problem with her outfit being dull. I like the brown shoes with the black. They're almost golden brown and against her skin, they're almost a neutral, like she didn't want to be stumpy.

Bronze metallic shoes, not "brown."

I like her dress; I covet her waist. The pants are too short, but the thing about the pantsuit is *I WANT THAT JACKET.* I want it a whole lot- great fabric, great shape. Only, being a crone instead of a fresh blooming thing like America the Beautiful, here, I couldn't wear that stark a black, so what's the point?

Don't you think the jacket would have worked better with a pencil skirt, though?

Call me crazy - I think she looks cute in both. Maybe a little too high with the hair? But I can't fault her for that, because I just love her.

Can I just say how endearing those freckles across her nose are?

I don't like her hair. Just don't. Is all.

She just might be a bit tired of her colourfull outfits on Ugly Betty. You know? When you have to wear a lot of different colours and prints combined together you might be just like: God, I NEED A BREAK!

she was going to a job interview for a sectretarial job and then she got shot in the stomach with a sequin gun. WHAT IS IT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND?

Does anyone know who designed/made/sells the LBD?

You know how all stylists say "make your hair high and you'll look taller". America Ferrera looks like stupid short girl who believes everything that stylists say... She looks like a short girl in an ugly hairdo!

Trouser suit makes her look very heavy, LBD is better but somehow she just makes it look boring. Perhaps some ravishing red lippy and red shoes? Or a dab of confidence? I think the lack of confidence is the biggest fug in here... :(

I love my collection of men's Hanes v-neck t-shirts...to work out in. Under a suit? Not so much. I do love the dress, sparkles and all.

the LBD would be cute - if it were only a LITTLE shorter... its kind of frumpy at that length, no?

The other is perfectly fine, just blah.

I can't say I hate it. I'd much prefer to see someone in a tasteful, conservative suit than some awful, gaudy dress that looks like it's held together by dental floss.

Hate 'em both. I experience flaming fiery boredom with black. I know...sacrilege! America's cute as a button, yet she looks like a widow from the old country in both outfits.

Isn't it time to emancipate women from the tyranny of black? Really, most of the time it just looks boring. Just remember Chanel chose black as a joke on her clientele--black being the color of the uniforms of the servant class.

Ugh, I don't even like her HEAD. DO OVER. I saw the first one in another angle and the suit combined with the hair just made me think 80s, bad, bad, bad.
Another publication called her crystals on the LBD a "snowflake burst" now that's all I see; a giant snowflake. It's OCTOBER and her dress is making me lament the snow that will inevitably hit the east coast soon.

She's only 24?! Man, she needs to wear something that is much younger than either of these two things. That dress is nice, but she looks ... more mature than her age, if you know what I mean. I know she's curvy, but there has to be something young for her, doesn't there?

Now, I think A. Ferrera could totally pull off a stark black suit look with a white tee -- but who steered her into THAT one?

Come on, stylist people. She is NOT that "fat", and she's in her twenties. Why is she in the best chubby-chick workwear can offer? That prim 3/4 sleeve blazer and cropped trou combo does nothing for her, and makes her look like someone's downtrodden secretary. Why is she not rocking the trendiness, with some better trousers, and one of the longer fashionable blazers with the sleeves rolled up and the buttons undone, and a statement necklace?

The dress is okay. I'm not fond of the half-hearted detail at the neck, which looks accidentally rather than intentionally drapey, and it could stand to be two inches shorter. (Seriously - skirts cut off precisely at the kneecap suit NO ONE, and are particularly bad on those with any kind of flesh on the legbones.) I also have a suspicion that there's absolutely no detail or interest at the back, which is a personal gripe of mine; we are all three-dimensional, make us pretty when we turn around, too, okay?

To those saying, "well, she's larger than the average starlet bear," I call bullshit. So maybe she really can't get fashionable clothes that fit in LA. I'm about the same size or maybe a bit bigger, with a lot less money, and I can manage to find fashionable clothes that fit in my dull little corner of Canada. Plus there's a whole wide world of Internet out there. Surely someone could call in a special order or two.

That pantsuit would look great on my mom, who is pushing 70 and works at a bank. Granted, my mom is adorable and she would wear the suit with a floral top instead of a tee. But I think we can all agree that "senior citizen bank teller" is not the look lovely young America should be emulating.

The LBD: Love. I really like how it has a classic silhouette and funky embellishment.

forget about the clothes - it's the hair we all need to worry about.

Bumpits (or bum pits as my dad like to call them) are evil, even on someone refreshing like AFerr. Burn the pants. Cleavage the dress. Calm the hair. Oh, and when you're hitting two stops in one day, there's nothing that says you can't bring along a second pair of shoes.

I love the LBD. The other one makes her look extremely short and thick through the middle, like one of those fun house mirrors that makes everyone look the size of a garden gnome. Especially with the high hair - squeeze in the middle, stretch out the ends. Not nice. :(

But she looks gawjuss in the LBD. I heart her tremendously, poor fashion choices and all.

Um, the first one with some jeans and red converse??? Awesome.
The LBD is amazing. But what I love most of all, is the gravity defying hair! I want it. I need it.

the pants remind me of some of my pants when i over hemmed them because i am so damn short, with all the money she makes ...at least get a good hair stylist and....sewing person lol

I love her in the suit. It fits perfect, I see no cankle, and I love deep Vs under certain blazers. Women who don't like other women in suits don't know how to wear them.

I really don't think the first one flatters her at all. Or maybe it's just the angle of the photo.
The second one, I love. I wish my gut bled beads. But it doesn't. Just bananas.

The first one is about 90% there... all I'd do is change the color of the shirt under the jacket to some thing brighter (pink or a pale blue) and lengthen the pants by an inch.

The second is just great. If you had to press me to make a change, I'd raise the skirt so it hits immediately above the knee.

Re the LBD: It looks to me like some horrid combo of influences have convinced her that her torso is not lovely and voluptuous in the best way, which of course it is; and consequently she is "understating" it, or in this particular case, wrapping it in sackcloth and ashes. Free America's chest!

From the waist up, the suit is fine. Hane's shirt and all.

The LBD: I can't get with the safety-pin explosion on her tum-tum. I love America's figure, but an explosion like that around the waistline gives the illusion that her waist is bigger than it really is. If we must have such an explosion, put in on the chest, where it's at least in harmony with her curves.

Her poor waist looks like a pincushion, like some sadistic stylist is using her for voodoo.

Free America's tummy, too!
