Fug or Fab: Christina Ricci

This dress on Christina Ricci is a prime example of something that, for whatever reason, triggered a weird mental association for me and now I can't judge it on its own merits.

First, I thought the sparkly strip looked like the silhouette of a bejewelled bra being flung through the air. Then it evoked the stripe of glitter that appears somewhere different on Mariah Carey's body in every scene of Glitter (because that movie is a bastion of subtlety). And now all I can think of is That F'ing Movie, with horrible Max Beesley playing her love interest and the terrible acting and boring, boring story that's not even FUN-bad but rather merely BAD-bad, except for that one hilarious scene where the video director says, "Is she black? Is she white? I don't know. I need to see more of her breasts." Which I guess brings me back to the bra imagery. Thank you, Glitter, for bringing me full circle at least, even if I can't get back those two hours of my life.

None of which helps me evaluate this.

It actually looks like the 'Rage' comic book character created for the TV series "Queer as Folk". But then maybe that's just me.

I had no idea that Christina Ricci could look that good.

Association? How about Monica Lewinsky's dress.

she actually looks really good, the hair cut is a big improvement!
the dress... meh.

This dress is, from what I've learned from watching Project Runway, missing LUXE! Also, it looks like something that would be in the bottom three on one of the first episodes of a season on Project Runway! (read: cheap and not very well made).

Thank-you for the Lewinsky comment! I thought I was the only one who saw that!

Yeah, I totally thought you were taking the Monica Lewinsky route after the picture.

The rest of her looks great, though.

her hair and make-up look fabulous! i wish the the glitter patch was a little less lumpy though. and i wish christina would gain about 5 lbs. she is so TINY now! with bangs though, she looks a bit more healthy. it doesn't make her head look so big compared to her body.

I dunno, I mean, she does look nice, but I still think Christina Ricci needs to put back the weight she lost years ago. I think she should take her cue from Christina Hendricks. Ricci was SMOKIN' when she was curvy, and when she's this skinny, her head just looks too big and her body isn't pretty at all.... She just looks like a lollipop. I miss the round Christina Ricci.

you should have an option that says, "christina ricci needs to eat a pizza."

she looks like she's channeling Posh.

spicy.

Christina, please eat a sandwich. And a sheet cake. Her face is beautiful, but her body is painfully thin. From the angle the photo was taken, it looks like her hips are about the same width as her head. It looks like her head was Photoshopped onto that body. That's NOT right.

I really like this dress, actually, and her hair looks so good! But I agree with some of the other commenters; homegirl needs a sandwich. Or five. She's so pretty, but the waif look really isn't working for her.

I think she should gain a few pounds too.

The glitter looks to me like the Dave Matthews Band firedancer. Dave does formal? Who knew.

The sparkle-squiggle looks like an afterthought, with no planned purpose. On another note, I'm just relieved she has bangs again.

What happened to Christina Ricci? Her waistline is dangerously narrow. Not good.

Am I the only person who glanced at this and thought, 'Wow, Bai Ling's dialled it down for once, that's quite... Oh.'

She needs to eat something...eep.

Lest the comments get closed to all us fug-lovers, maybe there could be a bit more attention on the dress and styling, a little less on people's opinions of her weight and health.

It looks like Zorro got to her.

I definitely had the Monica Lewinsky thought before the brassiere thought. But I really don't mind at this point because girlfriend's haircut looks AMAZING. Maybe she read the comments from her last fug...? No more shiny Hubble-mirror forehead, brava!

Let's try to keep it mostly about the clothes please, guys -- though actually I must say that I think her legs look great!

Her hair, make-up, and tailoring is great. I truly adore her bangs. Pictures like this make me want to go to my hairdresser immediately to get some. Unlike other commentors, I think her weight is fine. Could she gain 5lbs and still look great? Yes. Does she really need to? No. She does not look skeletal AT ALL, and she still looks curvy to me. Are you people missing her awesome waist to hip ratio?

And that Monica Lewinsky thing had me laughing out loud. Now that's all I can imagine.

Nice dress that has been torn... ;D

You're actually right about the bejewelled bra flying there. Was Dita von Teese around the corner?? *looks around*

Nice shoes, though.

The hair is an improvement. Having a bit of it in her face, even if they are anime looking bangs that I am not at all fond of, makes her look like less of a bobblehead. I really want to see her wear her hair down and free for once, though. She's getting there.

Love the make up. She looks great.

I would like the dress more if there was no random, white, glittery thing on it. What is that? The dress is great. It's exactly what a petite woman with legs like that looks best in. But dude, the white thing is so random and uncalled for.

Overall, not a bad effort, but the white thing...

I actually like the dress, apart from the collar; on some people, it might work, but on her it looks like a neck brace, and gives a bobble-head effect (slightly enhanced by the usual, crummy foreshortening angle of this sort of shot). The collar must go.

Those bangs need to go too; there is not a soul on this planet whose appearance is improved by bangs that curve around the face, as C.N.'s do, here; they're awful on everybody (yes, including Heidi Klum): they either make the head look bulky (as is the case here) or make the features look coarse; I do not care how fashionable this is, this look needs a stake through its heart!

Love the color and cut of the dress on her, don't like the stripe of whatever that is. Hair and makeup look fab, too--love her with bangs.

Love the dress, think she looks great. I just wish, upon closer inspection, that the lightning-bra-bolt-thingie had been appliqued on or woven into the fabric, not exposed with a pair of safety scissors by a toddler. Sleeker, please!

Wow! I totally did not recognize Christina Ricci, and I LOVELOVELOVE her. Sandwiches and pizza are definitely in order.

Bangs are a good look for her, though.

I'm OK with the dress. It's kinda funky and yes, the sparkly thing DOES look like a bra.

I would never choose to wear a dress like this, (oh yeah, as if!) but on CR it looks all right.

On anyone else, meh. Ricci is WORKING IT. (Love her, esp. as Trixie.)

PS: I think the stripe looks like a ski slope, which is kind of cool.

I think she looks amazing. Those legs go on for days!

I thought the white stripe looked like a piece of toilet paper. Not the kind of toilet paper you find in your bathroom, the thin scratchy kind you find in airport bathrooms.

All I see is a cute LBD, with a shred of dryer sheet stuck to the front. I hate when that happens (although it's worse when they're lurking in your sleeve...)

Hmmm, along "Glitter" lines...at first glance I thought the strip was the "Showgirls" logo with a torso and leg sticking through a semi-open curtain.

Why does Christina Ricci's head look too big for her tiny, tiny body?

Why does Christina Ricci's head look too big for her tiny, tiny body?

How is no one noticing that it looks like her head is on backwards? With that shoulder to waist ratio, I cant get past it to see the merits of said dress.

It looks like baby puke to me....but I like the shoes!

First impression? Pat Benatar

I feel the need to make her a large plate of pasta. Or a giant hoagie. She's so cute but she's WAY too skinny.

It's fab, albeit Monica Lewinsky-esque (as per previous commenter), but please eat a sandwich!

I think she looks amazing...definitely not the old christina we know

I like everything except the lame be-boobed glittery lightening bolt.

She looks plasticized, unreal and she is way too thin. The dress? Not appealing alone or on her.

The streak on the dress is kind of weird, but not so much that it's awful. It helps that the cut is great on her, the length is good, and her haircut is awesome. Those bangs really look great on her face. Kudos, Ms. Ricci. Even if your outfit reminds people of really, really bad movies.

Her face, hair and legs look amazing, and I LOL'd at the comment about Pat Benatar, so true! And not to contribute too much to comments about her slightness, but I saw a photo of her the other day in a bikini and wowsa, she's teeny. I've actually seen her in person and she's super petite, but proportionate. Could be the angle.

And once again, GFY spot on with the flying bra comment, that's exactly what it looks like!

What I love most is the look in her eye -- Ricci has always been one actress that can chill the soul with a glance. I also think her hair and general appearance are becoming, if a bit thin. The white thing on the black dress is distracting, though. If there were less of it, or it was more tailored to match the rest of the ensemble, it might be better. As it is, it just looks messy. I can understand the need to lighten the controlled nature of the look, but I think some really super jewelry would have been more to the purpose. (Why does no one wear pins any more, btw?)

Are you sure that's Ricci? She's too skinny!!! She needs to eat a cheeseburger, asap!

She looks like a grasshopper.

How on Earth is this quarter-hearted attempt at glitter supposed to be fab? Puh-lease!
Before you go out like that, stop and learn from the masters. Any episode of Dynasty will teach you manners. You can't neglect sequins like that.

Agreed, the dress is fab. Agreed, she needs to eat a BLT. It feels like I have never actually seen Miss Ricci with the adult body she is supposed to have. She went from pre-pubescent Wednesday to 22 and strangley lollipoped. Oh hang on...I think she was the right shape in the movie with Lisa Kudrow. she was blonde? Dammit, forgot the name.

Also, sorry I assume I know better than you when it comes to your body, Miss Ricci - but I really do. Eat, boebie, eat!

I'm getting a distinct Hitchcockian vibe...

Real quick: I'd like to momentarily to defend Max Beesley. I sort of heart him in the DELIGHTFUL BBC show Hotel Babylon. Seriously, watch it.

Sorry for the aside. RE: Ms. Ricci--all I can see is flying bra on the dress, but the bangs are hot, her legs look amazing, and she's giving great face, so overall I think she gets a pass.

I saw the bra shaped thing and thought "oh, that looks like one of my sparkly belly dance costume bras" before I read a word of the post. Then that's all I could see. I'm sure the dress is otherwise lovely, but I'm too distracted.

I'm so happy that she's embraced bangs that I can't even focus on the dress.

I'm so happy that she's embraced bangs that I can't even focus on the dress.

dude, the bra thing was not a random mental thing. that is exactly what i thought it looked like, not subliminally influenced by you as i had not yet scrolled down. i thought it looked like a bra strewn across the floor (i have a messy bedroom.)

but yeah, she looks good. too bad all i saw was the bra.

Face and hair look amazing. The cut of the dress is to die for. But the pattern on it makes it look like she sneezed down her dress. Poor thing.

Is it just me or does Christina Ricci look extremely....narrow? I know she's a tiny little thing, but she looks thinner than usual.

I would just like to state, for the record, that I'd have voted "fab" no matter what simply because I love her haircut. Always wear bangs, Christina! But the dress itself looks cute on her, even if that thing on the front is strangely bra-like.

The dress itself is not that bad, but the light... uhm, thing on it reminds me unpleasantly of one of the scotomata I suffer from during a migraine attack. I can't look at it without getting a headache.

I can't stand anything that comes in the form of a sleeveless turtleneck.

It looks like she is suffering from static cling with a glitter bra. Not cute.

The rest however - hotness.

While actual weight gain would be ideal, this dress almost makes her look healthy. Perhaps it's because it covers up both her razorblade-clavicle and washboard-sternum. This could be progress.

It makes her head look like it's on backwards. And yes, WAY too skinny.

Glitter baby-spit-up accident. That's all I can see.

Glitter is on hbo RIGHT NOW.

Had to share.

Maybe it's my monitor, but I don't really see sparkles, so that white strip makes the dress look a bit like a worn old teddy bear got on the wrong side of Zorro, and the stuffing's coming out.

OMG, Christina, let me get you a paper towel! Don't worry, girlfriend, we've all gotten toothpaste on ourselves at some point in our lives, but here, let's get that off of you before you go inside. That's better!

Her hair is rad and I like her makeup, though. And the no-frills, clean-lines dress would go really well with that if it wasn't for the Crest Sparkle Fun strip on it.

It's fab. Christina Ricci is fab. Christina Ricci's bangs are fab.

It's not the dress at all. What's confusing you is the fact that the circumference of her head is bigger than the circumference of her hips.

Glad to see she's pushing for the lead in the Pat Benetar biopic...
